UCL MD1: Sevilla vs Red Bull Salzburg

Yeah Lamela doing work, to bite off something here. Instead of sit and die.

What a chance for Mir!

Very disappointing starting line-up selection by Lope, lacking ambition for the crucial match to kick off this season’s CL.
Feel sorry for Lamela to have to come on only when Sevilla went down to 10 and into largely containing mode. Suso had done nothing to deserve the starting place at the expense of Erik.

Rafa Mir has been underwhelming so far at Sevilla, not fully switched on and wasteful with the chances he had.

For a red card there has to be a VAR

Playing better now despite 10 men with the changes. Great ball from acuna and unlucky by Lamela.

This 2nd half surely shows to lope that his better players were left on the bench. I hope these guys start the next game. The old traditional lineup from last season needs changing up more.

Well… what have I missed?

This ref is hell bent on booking only Sevilla players while letting Salzburg players off for very similar fouls - no wonder the likes of Navas and Delaney are getting very frustrated here.

What is wrong with our players? We did so many stupid fouls, arguing with ref… i don’t understand what is happening

I’m all for referees giving yellows for diving, but the problem is that they’re not consistent. A little unfair when someone gets booked for simulation but other people can do the same and just be told to “play on”

I’ll take a draw. That’s a great result for us because of all the craziness. We got a jail to get a point. Let’s move on lol

For everything no. But the last minute penalty was the final nail for me, verdict guilty.

Thank you very much Lope - because of your tactics and lineup we were gifted a shitshow like this. Absolutely disgraceful coaching.

As for the referee… I simply don’t understand how can such an incompetent criminal referee judge a match in the CL group stage.

What a pitiful night thanks to Lope and the ref. Amazing!

Best summary !!!

I can’t type it but it’s kinda funny how @SurreySevilla said how we can’t blame the ref then immideualty says how wasn’t there a VAR check

This should be a very good indication of how NOT to play this group stage. When we needed the Lope-ball with a controlled, calm and boring passing around, we instead got waaaaay too hot-headed and lost our cool.

I disagree with the ones saying all the penalties were fair and I completely understand the frustration from the players, but that wasn’t why we dropped points. I saw us as the big boy in this group. We didn’t exactly show that tonight

Nahh come on man. You really think the ref was ok tonight? This type of refereeing is not even seen in low level leagues of third world countries. This is what happens when the match gets out of the refs control, it’s shameful to see it honestly. The red card should not have been given for YEN, it was offside, so it cancels any in-play action such as diving - basic rules.

Then he gave Salzburg every 50-50 foul while wouldn’t give us any of those, rarely so. It was extremely obvious that he was favoring Salzburg and who knows why? We can only assume at this point.

However, this would’ve never happen to a serious team with a serious coach like Atletico or the likes. We are far from a serious team. What can you expect from a coach that makes the same mistakes and expects different results? He will probably say that the team played well and we deserved more than 1 point, will blame the referee indirectly or something, Lope style - but this will never make us any better or get us to the next level.

We have the squad quality and depth to beat teams like RB Salzburg with ease. We simply don’t have the right man in charge to do it. Hopefully he will learn from the mistakes and make the necessary changes quickly, or we’re in for another pathetic season.

How come so? They are in close coordination and VAR only suggests things for the ref - ref has the right to ask the VAR refs for clarification/explanation but they can also notify the ref just in case.

I really hope this will be the last match in CL or any important competition of UEFA for this ref. If it is not, then it was clearly on purpose, a kind of deal or something - can’t be anything else really. There were instances when refs were removed from competitions and their careers took a nosedive for much less. If this is not enough evidence to do so then I don’t know what is.

1st penalty, the defender wouldn’t have done that if he was inside the box, he was clearly inclined outside the box.
2nd penalty just a bit of petulance from Navas that normally doesn’t even get a word from the referee
3rd penalty - Bang to rights.

We can say that Suso didn’t play well, Ocampos was a huge disappointment, we can argue the merits of Jordan and other things but the problem is the system.
