Mendilibar out - Diego Alonso in

Well, anything is better than Marcelino or Lope.

Diego Alonso

Bit of a read, but goes into everything from his background to elements of play, if anything he likes to mix formations and promote youngsters. Sevilla do not have a Bentancur or Valverde but still worth anticipating what he can do.

From a professional appearance point I liked him a bunch. I’m an Uruguay fan, and what I’ve seen from them during that time was stale and uninspiring and solely based on individual talent to break open the game which Uruguay has but in the world cup it didn’t come out much besides some bad luck. So from a fieldplay perspective I’m a bit reserved but would love to see how he works a league team and hope it goes well. Since Managing Nations is a completely different matter and pure result pay off more.

Welcome Diego Alonso, glad with the Uruguayan tint, and wishing for a nice and successful campaign together.

Vamoos mi Sevilla!

I have a feeling, Orta and Diego Alonso are aiming to go after Facundo Pellistri together as well. I definitely hope we can get something promising going upfront and drop off more of our old goods this January. Pray for progress :pray:t2:

excited to see what diego alonso can do with our squad!! i didnt find uruguay particularly special during the world cup but i thought their attacking play during the qualifiers was nice. overall this is a positive appointment, better than the other managers rumored lmao

Agreed, Otra and the Board managed to get me positively excited. Which is why I did the poll before hand to see the difference after the appointment of that new name. The excitement is a thing by itself already and I am looking forward to our first game.

I’ll poll again when it’s official curious what the crowd feels.

Sampaoli with hair.

Then I will sell him as a well-mannered Diego Simeone without the dog face.

Hoping for him to be a stimulating manager with a winning mentality and no weak shit attitude.

The ideas on the field I will have to see. I generally like the idea of directness and anti lopeball to speed up the game when necessary. And like Atletico not needing to have possession, while still being capable of it. He’s of a bit younger generation, he is an ex striker again hopefully showing through in the approach to play towards your striker. We might go towards a two striker system more once we have the right players. Again in contrast to where Lope as an ex GK, played towards his defenders.

And the least important but still a point that he looks professional and a good leader. Where Mendi looked a bit more like a wacky uncle in those polos and on the pressers, eventhough it was good fun lol.

Still a bit of a risky and bold move from the board, but at least it shows ambition instead of stagnation and I like that approach.

His points-per-match average isn’t inspiring, but I’m with Enrico, I like the gamble. Try something different. Let’s see how it plays out.

Most dude said Diego Alonso is crap.
Not sure if he can last longer than Sampaoli.
Hope it’s wrong.

I am sure that some Leeds fans will inform us soon on how bad this manager is

I always prefer someone Spanish-born (is that Nationalist of me?) but D. Alonso seems a good replacement. 2x CONCACAF Champion; 1x Mexican Clausura Champion; Head Coach of a national team (Uruguay). Finally, someone under the age of 85! Is that agist of me…

Edit: everyone on r/soccer hating this appointment. Have to say, I didn’t follow Uruguay in the World Cup too closely.

He has a contract for 3/4 of a year, nothing more. It will be just a new approach until summer and I’m pretty sure we will make up a new balance by then.
If things go Well and there are many positive developments we can continue and break open the contract, if not just say goodbye.

It’s just a new approach and direction hoping to catch on for the remainder of the season, where with Mendi it would have been a lost cause and apparently there was friction with Orta and him already.

He might not be the most proven and successful trainer but neither was Mendilibar who doesnt even have that ambition anyway.

My first impression from the interview after the first training is good and i think its fair to be skeptical from his record but there is more behind it.

Some short takes from it:
The system eventhough he’s known for 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 is irrelevant he says. What matters more is getting in positions that the players can use their strengths and are comfortable and to create the game winning moments.

Thinks the aggressive approach with high pressure football, be dominant and try improve quick combinations is the best way forward. But realistically he says everybody wants that. The more motivating part and connecting to the group is a more intimate part.

Trainer with a positive mentality, and aims to be near the side line to support the players and has their back. They are the protagonists but I’m there with them. I like this a lot.

Funny part to me was, As the question is being asked, after the break youre gonna play Real Madrid and Arsenal within 3 days. He’s staring into darkness as the words come out, but says he knows the full schedule haha. We always find nice moments for a new trainer to start.

I agree and you can play any formation on paper, like any formation on the field .And realistically you only need to play your right moments succesfully for short periods, 90 minutes of mild domination doesnt create you much as we have seen before. And the positive mentality is also a big thing, You can say no trainer wants to have a negative mentality but when you see them and how they act, shows they absolutely do.

Wanted to poll the folks feeling, instead of the firing timing like Jesus. Since his contract is only 3/4 of a year after all and wanted to see how the boards choice affected the mood.

  • Still neutral
  • Negative, don’t like the newly appointed manager
  • Optimistic, positive change

To me the interesting part is that Diego Alonso was pushed as Viktor Orta his candidate and even though we can only guess how it all went down, it says something about the power dynamic.

Diego Alonso had his first training session with Sevilla FC yesterday in the Sevilla Sports City.
The top leaders of the entity came there to support him, with Pepe Castro at the helm, along with Del Nido Carrasco and Víctor Orta.
In an image from El Chiringuito, the conversation they have had is revealed, with phrases like “This can turn out VERY GOOD or VERY BAD” or “In the end it’s either ME or YOU TO BLAME.”

It’s not “either ME or YOU TO BLAME”
I’d say it’s only Castro to blame at the end.

Well… Castro declaring it was a conversation about a different topic. Something related to the manager of Sevilla Atlético who wil go to Huesca according to him. And blaming Chiringuito for in a way making fake news like that.

Maybe it was maybe it wasn’t.

Continuing the discussion from Mendilibar out - Diego Alonso in:

Watching Diego Alonso interview from last night:

Noticed he said that he was “in Spain after the World Cup, studying with RFEF and spending time working on languages, which is something that all modern coaches need to work on” (paraphrased from memory, sorry if it’s not exact).

Interesting/ironic that he mentioned this given all the bad press Mendi got for judging players harshly who didn’t speak Spanish. Will be curious to see if the official videos in coming days capture him greeting players in French or English (or German, I suppose, though that seems less likely).

Lots of discussion in the interview about tactics, ideas, visions, etc. All Greek to me. I would be a terrible football coach because I sincerely think all coaches are just making this crap up and 90% of coaching is just emotional intelligence and ability to communicate effectively with players so that they can communicate effectively with each other. Anyhow, no idea what the hell Alonso was talking about in this interview, but maybe some of the tactical/strategy gurus among us can make heads or tails of it (drafted this before Enrico’s post)

How about in the press conference and presentation of Diego Alonso. After already having declared the rumoured matter about “it will go very well or very bad” was about the Sevilla Atlético manager.

An interviewer asks the dead ass question to Pepe Castro. Do you think the future for the club under Diego Alonso will go either very well or very bad? :joy:
