MD7 - Sevilla FC vs Atletico Madrid [22/23]

If you can’t stay ahead of Cadiz, Almeria, and Elche. I mean…

No guarantees with this current squad and mood at club. We were even lucky to win at espanyol.

Ooooooh gooood this is depressing. I’ve come to terms with the fact that this season will be mediocre regarding results, but having to look at this style of football, the complete emptiness and hopelesness in players’ faces, Lope’s desperation and the disbelief of the crowd at the RSP… oh boy.

Hang on Mark, the problem is a non functional system of play and it’s entirely at the door of the trainer. It’s not been Monchi’s best spending but he simply cannot be so successful every season.

With Lopetegui we are fighting a relegation battle despite having a top 6 squad, that is a fact.

While he’s partly to blame I don’t think it’s fair to lay it all at his door. Some players are either lazy or not good enough to play at the level we desire. We have had a terrible transfer window and they never supported lope or team after another 4th place finish. I think lope is frustrated and while his tactics are poor and outdated at times he’s had very little support from the board. There are many people to blame here.

You say we have a top 6 squad but I’m not so sure. Currently we weak at the back, in midfield and up front and have an ageing team. I don’t see much spark or quality in this side.

Exactly. Who is going to claim that Kike Salas is a top 6 central back? Was playing third division just weeks ago. I honestly think that a Marcão these past two months would have made another team out of this Sevilla.

But having Lope still as the manager, long overdue is part of it the board. It’s like a dog who’s been with the wrong abusive owner for too long, it almost starts to forget its a dog, instead of a sewer rat. But after the animal shelter and good hands taking care of it, the dog returns to full potential. I hope we get one of those beautiful before and after transformations.

Enough is enough

Then why is he on the field against Atletico Madrid?
Because the genius Dopeytegui thinks he’s at the level.

I agree. That defence lope is left with is a joke. Is it really his fault we leaking goals when that’s all he’s left with? We bought an injury sick-note player in marcao and the other defensive signings don’t appear up to it. Now we are left the kids in who are out their depth too. Navas as much as I love him is finished at top level now. I’m sure lope didn’t ask for this?

Then we have YEN or Mir who have been rubbish for months and unproven dolberg. An ageing midfield with no improvement apart from Isco. It’s really poor what the board did this summer. It’s a sorry mess.

We don’t have anyone else. That’s how limited we are right now.

We could have re-jigged the defence with Delaney, Rekik or Gudelj. The youngster is not ready.

It has been dreadful all of 2022 and some would argue even longer than that. It was dreadful even when we had DC and Kounde, and the style of football and the attacking play is not determined by the centerbacks. It was a disastrous transfer-window, sure, but the players have more quality than what is being shown. Of course the blame is not a 100% on Lope, but it’s time to give another manager a go.

Anyways, we can have a top six squad with one or two players that are not top 6 material, same as Real Madrid and Barcelona.

To add to this, it’s the result of a long-term pathetic system since at least 2020-21 (including the first part of 2019-20 and most of the second except EL which was a fluke).

He deserves jack shit for what has happened in the past. The world doesn’t work that way, otherwise you’d still have Ranieri managing Leicester because he won a Premier League trophy with them. They sacked him the year after because of poor results and everyone knew that it was a one-off fairy tale.

We still had to endure 3 seasons of shit play before this one started (except the EL which was a one-off miracle of its own) and that pathetic system is the culprit for what is happening now. Most of us were happy that we weren’t loosing, but look how that turned out. Lope sacrificed everything just to get those 4th places in the most pathetic ways possible.

Lope is the one that took the joy off of watching Sevilla, at least for me, but surely for a lot of other Sevillistas too. I will never remember this coach for anything good, ever. He has contributed literally nothing for Sevilla’s future, and even if slightly so, he has messed it up big time last season and in the beginning of this to ruin it all.

That has to be up there with the worst performances I have seen at the RSP. Something is seriously wrong at this club. The players looked like a beaten side even before the kick off, you can see by their body language that they have no interest in trying for Lope any longer, there is not one player on the pitch that can motivate the others. This is passed on to the supporters
Even the guy with the loud hailer was flogging a dead horse with most of the Biris refusing to join in with the songs. People around me were yelling at him to “shut up, this team does not deserve our support”
That’s 3 games I have attended so far this season and I am yet to see us score! Getting pissed off with shelling out the cash every week on fuel, food and a stay over at the hotel.

You have my sympathy @Brian you can see the players are emotionally drained and angry, I’ve seen it crystal clear for weeks. Navas has one heck of a death stare when he looks at Lopetegui.

As for the Biri, I said it last night and I’ve said it before, they are the best and the worst. They just don’t quite get it sometimes, they’re like the committee at the old working mens clubs.

Yup, me too.
Thank goodness I didn’t buy a season ticket this year.

Salas is not, he needs time. Too early to write him off though.

Marcao might have made a difference but he’s just come over from a different league and it would take a while to acclimatise to a whole new system and environment, so it’s a bit too hopeful to put the fate of an entire team on one player only unless it’s on a Van Dijk / Halaand / KDB level. Carlos gave away a lot of fouls in his first season and Kounde was shaky for the first few games too. Marcao would need at least half a season to bed in.

Yes but the fact is half the squad is not top 6 material, I’m afraid.

Watched the game, close to 8 turnovers in the first half while trying to pass from the back spelt doom, we have to thank profilgacy from Morata and Griezmann or else it would’ve been a full blown rout and the RSP would be in riot. Also not getting why Rakitic and Navas didn’t start, against a big hitter like Atletico you have to start your experienced ones or what are they there for?

For all of Lope’s faults he managed to have Atletico’s number in the past few seasons and stayed mostly unbeaten against them, might count as a lifeline but this time he just played into their hands and got rightfully punished. I’m just thankful I was watching the Inter-Roma game at the same time, much more entertaining and worth my time.
