Similar to Salzburg, but this time with both teams playing quite similar, Van Bommel outplayed Lope tactically in that sense. They did what they had to do and it was painfully obvious that after that 1-0 lead it would take a miracle to turn things around. What happened happened and luckily it’s a draw but yeah… nearly beaten by Wolfsburg with the same tactics and approach, but with us having a better team on paper. Not good
Taking another positive, we are still unbeaten this season. I don’t know how but we are. We’ve definitely rode our luck at times in both the league and Europe.
We do need to improve though as the luck will run out. With the quality of squad we have performances should be better.
Lopes football sure isn’t pretty and I’ll admit we’ve gotten lucky, but he just guided us to our highest point total in history and we still are still (somehow) unbeaten.
The ex SAT and Granada coach Diego Martinez is available but almost nobody else. He did a good job with Granada.
What were his bad decisions? that he gave a lot of easy yellows to wolfsburg additionally? i’m not seeing the point here. He continued an advantage play that we didn’t deserve. He just created a new rule to make a penalty call in our favor, no bigger gifts can be given. What were his bad decisions towards us? I wanna know.
On paper and with the greatest respect to the other teams we should be walking this group. Okay we’re 2nd and still in the mix but we’re making a real mess of things. Got a battle on our hands to get out of this.
I don’t know about any potential replacement at this point. It’s early to sack Lope now and he deserves to stay until the end of the season, no matter what happens. If Monchi’s clever he should already be thinking for a replacement next season. I would like the idea of an attacking minded coach for once, or someone with a good balance that knows how to properly set the squad up to transition from defense to attack. I also wouldn’t mind a decent coach with counter-attacking as a specialty. We were originally a counter-attacking team to begin with and speed was our name of the game. Slow buildup and ball control is ok, but without productivity (proper attack and goals scored) it looks lame.
100% with you.
Quite dissapointed but i’ll shape up next time.
You wanna know, well I suppose I’ll have to watch the game again and itemize the argument.
One other thing, that atmosphere was quite intimidating wasn’t it? Not an excuse mind!
Probably. I would call, some trivial midfield free kicks and some throw ins. Nothing out of the ordinary. We got more than spoiled this game.
Got out of jail with the pen, bit harsh but we’ll take it.
I just wish we would mix it up a little, it goes out to the wings, we make cross after cross and the defence heads clear.
Why can’t we try coming inside now and again and someone actually trying a shot?
What’s gone wrong with Ocampos? he’s nowhere near the player he was in his 1st season?
Salzburg win with another 2 pens tonight. Maybe best we leave D Carlos out when we play the return.
Re the ref tonight. I’m not going to complain about him. I thought he let us get away with quite a few fouls tonight especially in the 1st half
Saw some of the post game interviews. And yes there are definitely possible ways to look at it positively. Lope is glad with the point, especially since it’s an away game. As you see, all other away teams lost and we didn’t. It’s true, we got an away point. We are in ojectively the worst group out of all of them and didn’t get a home win either. But okay.
Ocampos was quite content as well but with a bitter aftertaste, considering how the game went. Controlled and almost no chances against, but out of a sudden conceded but in the end maybe felt like they could have won it.
Rakitic was also proud of the team, how they have fought to get something back into the game. Which from his perspective is very true, when he entered, alarm bells were ringing, we did need to force something. we did show a better spirit towards the end, we tried quite hopelessly at first just up until the latest minutes thats when we actually got really close . So yes we did try. And without his class and composure to hit cleanly convert that high pressure moment, a different one would have made sweat more. So thanks Ivan.
Fernando atleast was dissapointed. First part, bad start hardly any good controlled play. After getting behind, making it more complicated but we started to get better but didn’t create enough. We knew they would be physical but we didn’t control and circulate the ball well enough. which needs to improve.
I can get behind that, what a guy Fernando.
Nobody speaking about the penalty. The otherside of the story, go watch the german media, and it will be called a robbery and a VAR-drama and they are wondering how much was paid to the Ref, for being Sevilla’s 12th player. That about sums it up.
They had a really good shooting chance around 20 minutes, where just straight through the middle the guy ran towards the box, mishitting it terribly. And before we went all out, and got the penalty. They had the open chance to finish it of 2-0. But Bono coming out well enough to save another day.
Bono was crucial with that amazing save
Yep he’s been immense again this season for us. He’s a big reason along with kounde-carlos why we still unbeaten. Comes up with big saves time and time again.
They won two PKs today too I think. Nuts
Their first penalty was 50/50 and even an offensive foul in the buildup leading to that. This kind of refereeing is quite worrying.
I’m just getting caught up here, but wow… most of this game was really difficult to watch. The officiating is inconsistent as hell, but we’ve got to play better as a team. It baffles me that we can be so cohesive in league play and then play so disjointed for 60+ minutes in UCL.
I’m happy to see that we didn’t give away any mindless penalties, but we didn’t do anything to generate pressure before the red card. This game was ours for the taking, but we didn’t capitalize.
That being said, I really liked the way we adjusted late game. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen such an attacking-minded string of subs. Also, we found Munir!
Hopefully we can build off of the final 15 minutes of this game going into Sunday’s game against Granada and finish strong before the break.
