The board won’t be united with who they hire until the board is united themselves. As long as there is a fracture in the board room, we’ll have these kinds of issues.
Unfortunately that’s true
Well, this whole thing escalated quickly. Romano’s already doing a pre-here we go so probably a done deal. Just not sure what Monchi can add to Aston Villa given they’ve done a pretty good job with free agents, Kamara signed with them last season and Tielemans has just joined even though they don’t have Champions league football to offer.
Been thinking for a while whether the signings are called by the DOF or the manager, we know Diego Carlos and Kounde were Monchi signings but the manager can also call the shots, the more notable ones being Emery specifically requesting Llorente (pedestrian but at least scored the winner against Juve which secured entry into EL for Emery’s third triumph) and Lope requesting Isco (urghh). So would really like to know who requested or had the final say on some of the average to plain shit signings in the past 3-4 seasons (Lopes, Idrissi, Augustinsson, Dolberg, Wober, Januzaj, Nianzou) I would add Rekik and Oscar as I don’t rate either of them.
p.s: fk me that is a long list of dross.
Rekik cost us €2M…
He played decently the last three seasons when he got playing time and came in pretty clutch as a make-shift leftback when our defense was in shambles. So get him off your list and put that bumass Martial in there, because we spent fucking €6M to get like 600 minutes of poopy playing time from that man.
Rekik isn’t bad at all, and has improved over his time here. He just can’t stay fit.
I would gladly put Martial there as I was never convinced from the start he could make an impact; but take a look at threads from then, everyone was hyped thinking he would rejuvenate his career here. Monchi even pulled some strings and got the real Ronaldo to do a clip as encouragement - we all know how that turned out. Which makes me ask was it a Monchi or Lope signing?
As for Rekik, price wise smart, quality wise so-so.
And for the ultimate decision: Rafa Mir -Flop or not?

That time, Monchi was on the podcast.
And i’d hype up that signing every time. We had a legit shot at the title, but also a legit injury plague, that didn’t exclude Martial. You could sum it up with Camavinga’s tackle: he escaped a 2nd yellow & injured Martial in the process.
I get the impression they both approved the signing, considering we’d been linked to him in the past. I’m sure Monchi wanted a longterm project w Lope, knowing he was so reluctant to see him off. I’m also positive the handling of last summer’s transfers had little to do with Monchi. Yes he’s had misses, but such bad planning? That’s not how he works.
@Edinho do you think that window’s poor signings were due less to Monchi, than the board imposing financial restrictions and an ongoing conflict over whether to continue with Lope and his style?
I think a lack of funds meant that once they had committed to sign Marcao & Nianzou, they were stuck looking at cheap loans and free signings, which had to fit in with Lope’s preference for experience over youth. I still don’t understand the logic behind signing Dolberg and Januzaj.
@JeMannji — Mostly likely just having different visions. Regardless, it was still poorly handled. We’ve been saying even before last season ended: either you stick w Lope and give him what he needs, or you start anew. Half-assing it nearly cost us dearly, if not for Mendilibar. But we still lost Monchi in the end. Why continue working if they’d allow us to start a season in such a way?
What a roller-coaster, after such a euphoric miraculous fairy tale end to the season, reality comes crashing back down. Would be a shame to see him go, especially to some unworthy English muppets who don’t appreciate the greatness of LaLiga (even tho Pep elevated EPL and made their sloppy league respectable in UEFA). He deserves the opportunity to scout elite speed & talent with Formula-1 money. Scouting for Roma in Serie A is more challenging than Sevilla. Have no doubt he’d thrive in Villa with Emery. Good luck to him if he goes but hope he stays. Sevilla is a special city and he made it a special club too
If not by monchi’s hand then it’s Lope calling the shots; but if Monchi wanted a long term project with lope (not sure if the feeling was mutual) the latter probably won’t sanction such poor signings. Unless a third party was also doing work there, Castro?
This also, as stated by the Monchi or Castro the pandemic really hurt Sevilla’s pockets; so they couldn’t put all the money from the Kounde and Carlos sales into the market. Marcao was not expected to be this fragile though I was scratching my head at Nianzou, guy’s biggest pull was probably being French and trained / toyed with by Lewa on a daily basis, he cost more than 20m so if any future sale is around 15m I’d be glad.
Roma aren’t doing too badly, Mou pieced together a pretty solid team and they have already added Aouar and N’Dicka as free agents even though they don’t have Champions league football to offer.
Come on man. He’s 20! He’s not Gnagnon. There are no signs that he doesn’t want to work hard to get better.
but he never showed that he wanted to do anything other than munch on donuts.
I won’t let you put my boy TANK in the same boat. Yes they’re both French/Ivorian CBs, but that’s where it stops. I think Tanguy just needs a bit more polish and reassurance, and he’ll be back on his feet. There’s a reason why Bayern, amongst other teams, have scouted him. Also, he’s only had 1 season here. Are we already at the stage of giving up on players this early? Young ones at that?
But you could still be right, and this doesn’t turn out as the classic Sevilla rescue job. He’s at least played more than Gnagnon though.
I think they were simply reluctant to spend money, hence all those loans in the last few weeks. Even the Nianzou signing felt sketchy, cause we spent so much time supposedly going after Kehrer or Nelsson, and never pulled the trigger.
Can anyone pinpoint the moment they thought maybe Monchi was going off reservation. He has seemed different since the bad start to the season and then he cheered up a lot for the semi-finals but even so, not his old self.
I’ve heard that this rupture is a culmination of events but the real break is something to do with being torn between Del Nido and Castro methods.
I’m with @Edinho leave off Nianzou, he’s got a lot of potential. It’s true his passing lacks but he’s a great pickpocket and he’s great in the air especially attacking corners. He needs to improve for sure but plenty of time for him, Koundé was nothing special in his first few games.
Monchi has left the building. Nervion we have a problem. Will he ever ‘Be Back’ ?
You could see the footballing talent in a defender way more in Kounde, even from the start. Nianzou is more rough and shaky, but approaches things less conventional in my opinion. Which sometimes works sometimes doesn’t. Something like a bird learning to fly, realizing he’s quite good at it. But at the same time is not there yet. Definitely deserves more time and trust.
Thanks Monchi for all efforts behind and infront of the screens, thoroughly enjoy the man speak and live with the club through everything. All the best at Aston Villa.
I still don’t have a comment/analysis on this… not sure how to feel about it.
Monchi’s disastrous stint at Roma should’ve proven something… but to each their own as they say.
