M35: Villarreal vs Sevilla 08-05-2022 [21/22]

Marie Kondo would tell us to throw this Sevilla away since it doesn’t spark joy.

I’m someone who wants a change of manager and no, we’re not good to watch. However, come on, you say ‘Tactically and mentality and performance wise outclassed’. We’re 3rd in the league with 65 points and Champions League all but secured for the third season running. Cut him some slack!

This was about a Villareal who had a midweek slaughter after getting their hopes up, beat down again. And we have only one thing to prepare for and we show up like this. Yes we were outclassed in all facets by Villareal, just not the end score. This is not the only game, let’s not make me want to bring back every game where we got more than we deserved and yes we are third well said.

Don’t disagree that Villarreal outplayed us and should have been there for the taking after their midweek European exertions. The performance wasn’t good and we deserved to lose.

However, we still managed a draw and despite Villarreal’s dominance, they couldn’t finish their chances. So they got what they deserved ultimately. We do sit in 3rd in the league while Villarreal sit in 7th. They’re the important statistics.

So I think your comments are harsh as are the ‘pathetically-lame’, ‘shameful’ and ‘vomit-inducing ones from @ShendM. Fair enough, criticise but be constructive. We’re all supporters of the team after all.

Nothing harsh considering that kind of play… he’s making me not watch Sevilla and why the hell should I be careful about how I express myself regarding the situation and towards a coward coach like him? Those comments are how I feel and only fair, if you feel otherwise then express yourself.

I won’t force myself to praise him or be optimistic when the reality is totally different… I’m a realist and when the facts change, I’ll gladly change my opinion. I have this opinion since the 2nd season with Lope… while the irritation only got worse unfortunately.

Also, I would absolutely make a compromise for these results, the debacle in Europe and the 4th place with a legit 3rd place squad (could be argued as underachievement) and everything else if we’ve played well, with courage and honor. Not like this… but can’t cut any slack here. Pathetic is pathetic…

It’s quite hard to be constructive, when the whole mentality put into the team by years of the same management is the issue. Predictable, and slow, lack of goal treat, businessy, . If your approach is to not lose, consolidate and maybe score and after all the games where you had 3 chances say: “we had some chances unfortunately we didn’t make as much.” All is fine no? Instead of say, We should create 14 chances, but we didn’t we only got 3. And for him 3 is enough, because that’s how he won all the lucky games before. But the reality is 3 is never enough, because you will fail unless they are the most clear cut beauty of attacks ever (which they won’t be how we set ourselves up) or pure luck. So there is no way you are gonna keep that going for years and years. Lope has tried to switch it up, but he can’t be taken seriously because it’s against his own preaching. And you see the team doesn’t have any clue how to execute other tactics, when he switched things up for moments he at one point tried a 4-4-2, they were all plain fiascos, after which he had to go back to his basics again. Preaching something he doesn’t have experience with and doesn’t believe in.There is way of thinking that just becomes part of the team, if the manager is there for 3 years straight. With the style Lope has, if things go down, they go down bad. He’s not creative, he’s not innovative, he’s not a great tactician and he doesn’t have balls. He’s a mediocre ex-goalkeeper with a defensive mentality that will struggle to find a way in modern football. He’s a good peoples manager with the ability to get everyone on the same page, but once the book is read. The re-read isn’t recommended. If you want 5 years of Lope in total, and think things will get better that’s fine. If you think this is the way to continue and build some sort of Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger legacy, you do you. I don’t believe any of it, and I don’t like the direction it’s taking Sevilla FC. End of my case.

I don’t think anyone is arguing with you guys. We know the football isn’t great and we disappointed in most competitions and games. I think we just grateful at least we going to finish top 4. It’s nice to have at least some good news to come out the season as it hasn’t been the best.

Still I think provided we in top 4 I very doubt he will be sacked. I feel a change is needed as well but I feel the board will stay loyal with him at least a year or 2 more.

I can respect either decision and it’s up to monchi and Castro as to what satisfies them.

The first question is do you think another coach can get more out of this current group of players or does the roster need some surgery?

If the roster needs a makeover, does the current coach get first crack at it or do you change the coach as well?

I’d like to be a fly on the wall when Monchi-Lope have their post-mortem, but whatever Monchi decides is fine with me.

Yes definitely. On the field for sure, there is way more potential than displayed.

Players can get rejuvenated when a new coach arrives as well tho. As Tim said, they seem so dissatisfied some of their faces, no enjoyment. See Benzema and Militao smiling when they are at the point of dropping out of the semi final. Where is that, they love football no? Did Lope suck this out of the team too, while setting up this businessy team. I’m not saying that’s true, but the effects of certain speeches and a trainer at one point just don’t find reception anymore in players. They get numbed after repetitiveness and it doesn’t strike or electrify them anymore. I feel this is lost in the current group and manager combination. Very normal, happens all the time, that’s why a trainers effective period (exceptions taken) is around 2 years. Is Lope that special, do the players put their life on the line on the field, like some for Atletico do for Simeone. If Monchi and Castro think it’s not, okay. But I don’t see it.

Can you respect monchi and Castro decision though if they keep him? It might not be what a lot of us want but will you understand why they will probably keep him another season at least?

I think they won’t want to rock the boat and we have achieved our objective 3 seasons straight. I can see it both ways to be fair even though I’m leaning more on the lope out side now.

A lot depends if he still has the players with him. If he does then it will make it harder for them to sack him yet until it really starts going downhill.

I respect that a lot.

Just to be clear, this would mean that they support their word with their deeds. Which is what I respect.
If they say they support him, well… support him.

I don’t think this current group of players minus a few are hungry. Kounde wants to eat, Carlos, Corona, Acuna at times, Jordan at times, but that’s it. Everyone else seems complacent with their careers. I think we need a massive change in the roster. You give Lope that opportunity to see it through with hungry players. If it still sucks, get rid of him. There is more to lose imo than there is to gain in sacking him at this point.

If he’s lost the locker room, then that is different. Monchi would know that and would make the change if that is the case.

Kounde really is exceptional. He’s also above tactics. Put him in any scenario and he will still eat. And will neutralize his counterpart and at the same time be your best attacker when nobody else does it, dragging the team forward in the 94th minute.

At one point when all the things surrounding the collapse of the transfer, got to his head a little bit and became a bit flammable. But his development has been immense still over this whole year.

Fun question, hypothetically. If Rulli was our Goalkeeper. How many points you reckon we’d have?

Exactly, a daily reminder to who we actually have to thank on our bare knees, for being in CL contention. Because without Bono, we definitely wouldn’t.

Just to be clear, I wasn’t arguing or trying to start anything. Everyone is entitled to their views. Just putting it out there about being fair and constructive.

I’m disappointed with the season we’ve had and the performances. It’s not been good enough and I do believe we can do a lot better. Both Lope and the players have to take responsibility for that. However I can see the positives of securing 4th for three seasons in a row. No manager has achieved that. I also will respect whatever decision the board make. If he stays as I expect, our start to next season will be crucial. Make a bad start and he’s under pressure. We need to get it right in the summer with who we let go and sign. Changes are needed for sure.
