La Liga Season 25-26 Thread

Oh right. I forgot they already had that. Ok that helps a bit then.

Rayo just secured a champions league spot for our neighbour

Levante won’t go away. damn Osasuna

Levante win again just underlines how much better the struggling teams are this season. It really go the wire. There going to be so many teams at risk of relegation. Going to need about 42 points to stay up potentially.

Alaves winning. I tell you what guys all these sides making it as tough as possible to stay up here!

Sevillismo vs likes of alaves, levante and co to battle to see who wins the relegation war!

1-1! Nice Elche!

A lucky escape for Elche with a 97th minute Alaves strike hitting the post

Bilbao could’ve put themselves into european spots but instead hand valencia three points, who are now probably safe at 42. villreal allow mallorca to take a point. still waiting on girona game to round out the week. i think we’d definitely be safe at 43, probably safe at 42, and needing some help if we get stuck on 40 or 41.

i guess it maybe helps a little that villreal basically have no prayer of catching RM for second? if they even care about that and have a six point cushion ahead of atletic… if that matters.

but seems to me they don’t have very much to play for and if they’re dropping points to mallorca, then why not us too? will be really interesting to see if the last two games gives us any momentum that can be carried on the road.

So here are the final games in the bottom half (I’ve excluded Oviedo’s since they’re goners.)

Important also in the calculations is the first tiebreaker of head-to-head. Sevilla:

-win the H2H against Rayo, Girona and Alaves
-equal with Osasuna, Elche, Espanyol
-losing H2H against Valencia, Mallorca and Levante.

It’s gonna be tight, but if I had to bet, it would be Levante and Espanyol going down.

The guy who said that he would not work anywhere in spain other than for sevilla has changed his mind, It’s now official. Monchi signs for Espanyol.

Habemus papa. I mean, habemos an agreement for sale

Ramos and 511 have gotten agreement from the shareholders to sell.

Details not announced, but I’m cautiously optimistic. Having a figurehead like SR, even if I’m not a huge fan of his character, I do think helps make this marginally less likely to become a Valencia-Lim story or a Malaga story, where new ownership misunderstands the dynamics of the business and the importance to maintain success in sporting at all times. I don’t actually know the stories of those clubs that well, but hopefully some of the folks around here who do can analyze the likelihood that a SR led presidency becomes as toxic as those two clubs experienced. Or maybe a Leeds warning from the EPL friends. @frogusmaximus perhaps can return for some warnings about turning over the reigns of a historic club to outsiders.

PS - Congrats to Leeds on surviving relegation, not a small feat in this EPL environment

oh wow, that’s big news and great to finally have resolved. while there’s lots of reason to caution our optimism and to look out for many potential pitfalls, we know this current path has not been working for many years.

is there any type of relegation contingency? while i (and most of us) are feeling much more optimistic these days, i look at that post from @JohnV above and… we still have work to do. it will depend a lot on how hard our opponents feel like playing in their final games and whether our recent home performances can be duplicated away.

Since private equity is involved and it is an investment group not a sole major shareholder like the billionaire Lim, I think they will seek to increase the value of the club over time and that can only be an advantage for the club in all aspects.

However, as with any PE investment as we see it in many industries, things can go wrong. The level of wrong can be from not achieving any success in the coming years as a ‘project’, not adding any real value or even bankrupting the club completely. Often these investment groups go all in and try to fast track things. It surely won’t be a Monchi-style management, but I’m still excited from what’s to come.

PE money is good and in our case it is a trillion times better than what we had with the current leadership, if they can be called leaders… pathetic bastards. But we shouldn’t get overly optimistic because then in case things go wrong, the disappointment will be huge.

It’s one of those unique seasons in La Liga where even 43 points might not be enough to stay up, especially for us. We still depend on ourselves with 3 more points than Alaves, but Alaves will have an easy win vs. Oviedo in their last match and they can still win one of their other 2 matches, while we are not favorites in any of our remaining matches.

We’ll need luck, brave play and to be mentally calm in order to make it… this is for the players. The coach has done the right thing in the last 2 matches with the formation and the way we’ve played indicates that, but also he has created a ‘system’ in his head as we can see it with the development of a super-sub like Alexis which was crucial in both matches. However, in these situations the coaches often wing it and hope for the best… the focus should be in the mental preparation too, especially for the upcoming 3 matches.

The last time where 43 points were not enough was in the 2010-11 season where ‘Super Depor’ was relegated. That was also the breaking point of Depor where they flirted back and forth with Segunda… only to be relegated for good in the 2017-18 season and go in a downward spiral.

Depor has a good chance to come back next season, still not sure if they’ll go direct or through playoffs, but there’s still a golden chance for them to do so.

And hopefully we won’t have their luck where even if we make it to 43 points, it won’t be enough to stay up due to this weird season.

Currently Levante are winning at Celta. Levante were 5-3-2 since the end of February coming into this game, so they’re in good form. That result would leave Sevilla 1 point off relegation. On the other hand it would end Celta’s Champions League hopes, meaning that Sevilla’s last 3 games, while against opponents in the top 6, could be against opponents with nothing to play for. Problem could be if Getafe catch up with Celta, meaning Celta would drop to the less lucrative Conference League instead of Europa.

Hard to see how a Ramos-led takeover would be any worse than currently, at least he’s someone with roots in the club and not a clueless/couldn’t care speculator like Lim/Al Thani.

After Levante’s win I’m shitting myself again! This relegation battle isn’t good for anyone’s mental health!
