What an ending for Switzerland, beautiful! Xhaka winning the toss, choosing first for the mental advantage if you score first, which they did. And even the pressure gets to Mbappe.
Dramatic matches tonight.
Quarters so far:
Switzerland vs. Spain
Belgium vs. Italy
Czech Republic vs. Denmark
The remaining 2 quarter finalists will be revealed tomorrow night.
France coach out of tactics, he could make use of Ben Yedder instead of an old timer like Giroud…
Papu scores again, GOLAZO! Nice assist from Messi too…
Papu draws a penalty as well
Those Euro games were frickin wild! Can’t believe THAT French team got knocked out. Felt like Benzema was just getting warmed up too. That touch for his 1st goal was the sexiest thing i seen all tournament.
Also i been waiting to see that fella Orsić play for Croatia, and he was giving those Spanish defenders the business! I’m surprised no one has taken him out of Zagreb yet. Definitely the kind of player with pace i’d like to see amongst our wingers.
If only Papu & Suso can linkup like this next season… cause Gómez can finish like a mf!
I wrote him off for his age 2 years ago but he just seems to keep getting better. Some of his touches are outlandish.
At least Koundé gets a rest.
The one time I decide to study instead of watch the Euros game
Copa America quarters:
Peru vs. Paraguay
Brazil vs. Chile
Uruguay vs. Colombia
Argentina vs. Ecuador
The way the draw is set up, can’t help but expect an Argentina vs. Brazil final, but anything can happen as there are teams like Uruguay, Colombia and Chile who can surprise anyone in a good night of theirs.
It’s difficult for us here in Europe to watch the matches due to the time zones (especially the ones after midnight), but I’m trying sometimes. From what I can see I’ll probably be able to watch the final (and maybe squeeze in another match in between) - hopefully Argentina makes it because of Papu and Acuna. Still bitter that Ocampos is not there though… he could’ve helped them immensely.
Definite ball first but I believe that the rules state that having his studs out like that even if you get the ball is a red card able offense. I absolutely see where you’re coming from, though.
I see both sides of it, but I think that studs to the knee like that, regardless of what happened before or anything, the referee had no choice but to send him off
You have a point. They want to prevent sliding with studs up at any time by calling that a red card I believe. Basically like the Sweden player made a good clearance but should have either lowered his studs or not attempted the clearance if that were impossible. I’m not saying I completely agree with that rule but I think that’s what they’re trying to accomplish.
Definitely a red card, even if he wasn’t making a challenge. Studs are showing, and it’s on the knee. Ref made the right decision imo
The referee is put in a tough situation in which he would face backlash no matter which decision he made. Ultimately, despite it not being the defenders fault, it does cause harm and endanger the safety of an opponent, so I feel like a red card warranted. Not his fault by any means, just unfortunate to be in that situation
It’s just unlucky, he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone but at the same time a referee can’t let that go unpunished. The Ukrainian could’ve had his leg broken there
Spain take an early lead against Switzerland thanks to a Zakaria own goal, the 10th this tournament
Yann Sommer has been immense. 10 saves, bringing 10 men Switzerland all the way to penalties. Wonder how this penalty shootout will go
He has made some nice saves. Not happy about heading to pens against them, especially after their win against France
