I was alerted to a SFC fan forum that had never heard about us, and they were fascinated by us. Anyway, I joined up and introduced ourselves, and it got me thinking if I could create a map of where all our users (not posters, there are many lurkers on this forum) are located. Anyway, here is that map:
This is based upon IP address so if someone is using a VPN, the data would be a bit scewed.
Nice
This could also be from countries that someone visited. For example I logged in to MM from Montenegro while on vacation, doesn’t mean that anyone lurked from there, just saying.
My VPN puts me in Tampa, FL I believe … but actually in NH!
lol, that read like: “we’ve made contact with alien life, and its friendly!”
I don’t know anything about tech and whether I’m using a VPN but it definitely missed Idaho. Probably put me in Utah
but really cool to see where everyone’s at. Quite the diversity.
Very cool, Chris, thanks. And largely passes the smell test of where you’d expect to find English speaking football
fans. If I saw a lot of pings from SSA or SE Asia, I’d be dubious, but this map largely tracks with my priors.
Thanks for building this!
PS - been building a bunch of automated data pipelines lately, would be curious if you think there’s a workflow to be built to make this map part of the site on an automated basis.
Unfortunately, at the moment no. Lots of manual steps to produce that, unless I paid for commercial APIs.
