Tim, ive spoken to many locals in Sevilla over the years, I remember a saying they used to say about Real Madrid getting those very favorable decisions. The saying was… A si, a si Real Madrid… it was saying here we again Real Madrid getting all those biased decisions again…
Honestly i have been watching Spanish Football for 20 years and the amount of biased decisions for RM and Barca has been incredible, they something in almost every game v Sevilla.
I was at the Barca Peña (sorry, Penya for you Catalans) for the match and when the Barca fans in the room all saw the replay and realized it wasn’t remotely a penalty, I started chanting “Negreira, Negreira, Negreira”.
Strangely enough, most of them just nodded.
There was a Granada v Real Madrid game, Pepe goes up for a corner, pushes a defender down and the Referee awards a penalty for Real Madrid. I think it was the same game where Madrid introduced a sub that was ineligible to play and the news spread through the stadium and the fans taunted Madrid all the second half.
And there was a Barcelona game where Pique was flat on his back and stuck his hand up to stop a shot, no penalty.
There are many instances of that old chestnut ‘unconscious bias’
Tim, in this book it would be great to feature Sevilla 10 best games, best players, best goals, best and worst kits, best signing pound for pound etc. 10 best memorable moments. Maybe the most crucial turning points in our history, such as the MBia goal at Valencia.
It’s all in there Mark and a lot more.
Search for ‘Piqué Handball’ and dozens come up, elespanyol have an article called ‘the long arm of Piqué’ and none of them resulted in penalty.
How important was Juande Ramos. What football we played in this 3 year spell… In my view became the best club team in Europe in this era… 2 x UEFA, Copa del Rey, Super Cup, Spanish Super Cub and were robbed of the Liga by Gonzalez, literally ripping teams apart. Beating Real Madrid 3-5 in the Spanish Super cup and Beating Barcelona 3-0 in Monaco! Who else did that in this era when they had some great players…
Given the players we had, it wasn’t difficult for the Manager. Only Lopetegui could have screwed that team up. I used to think Juande was the best but today if I had to reconstruct a Mount Rushmore I would put Reyes, Puerta, Navas and Kanoute there and then carve two more for Emery and Caparrós.
Monchi would’ve been on there 100% if his second spell here wouldn’t have happened.
Nah, Monchi still belongs on the Mt Rushmore. Definitely more than Teddy Roosevelt, I mean, Reyes. Just kidding about Reyes, but seriously about Teddy Roosevelt…why is he on Mt Rushmore?
Because he swam naked in the Potomac River.
Tim, what is best ever Sevilla, 1 to 11, with 4 subs? and Manager?
That’s easy, apart from the midfield. It’s Bono, Alves, Puerta, Diego Carlos, Koundé, Navas, Kanouté and Fabiano.
In the midfield It’s complicated, it’s possible to put Reyes in there in his original version although he wasn’t a midfielder then. Banega, Maresca, Rakitic, Poulsen, Marti, Keita.
Going back further in time, perhaps Anton Polster and Iván Zamorano could replace Fabiano but not Kanouté.
Best Manager … Emery
Subs … Duda on the wing for sure, Drago to support the defence, Escudé or Squilaci, Chevantón, Gameiro and Ben Yedder
And I don’t include Maradona
At last I’ve got a front page with some action for the book. Please feel free to give or suggest improvements or failures. If anyone has any photos of the Stadium inside or out, I might be able to use them.
I’ll send you what I got this week.
I Can get you some inside & out at the next home game if you want.
Anything specifically you need pics of?
That’ll be on the 24th, I’m going to print a few dozen before that and distribute to the press and club before I start ordering 100s.
So I can wait for the second run to include the photos, if all goes well that will be December.
I’m looking for unusual photo angles of anything in and around the stadium and a night-time exterior shot of the stadium illuminated.
I’ll see what I can do Tim. Certainly get you a couple of exterior illuminated shots
of the stadium as we leave.
