Nine years ago, Varas saved a Messi PK late to preserve a 0-0 draw in Camp Nou. That was a fun match.
I was watching in a bar in Madrid and the whole bar was going nuts with me. haha

Coincided with Diego Maradonna whose first goal was a penalty on Oct 14 (woooo, spooky). I also think they coincided with Davor Suker, Monchi was in the squad but second goalie until late 1990âs.
True. I think he went to Madrid. I bought a Trivial Pursuit of Sevilla in 2006. I was useless at it but I picked up a few things. The previous goalie Buyo also played for the national team.
1st photo. I donât recognize everyone, but top left is Rafa. next is Martignon, the goalie is Unzue, next is Suker.
Bottom left is Simeone, then Monchu (yes we had a Monchu), next Marcos and last 2 are Maradonna and looks like BiriBiri who probably wasnât playing because heâs not of that team and heâs got a jacket on.
Group: E
Odds of reaching the semis, per FiveThirtyEight: 15%
First match: drew with Chelsea 0-0
Next match: vs. Rennes (Wednesday)
I know, I know: wrong tournament. Sevilla are kings of the Europa League, having won it six times since 2006, so itâs easy to simply assume theyâll finish third in their group, land in the Europa knockout round and make a run.
They have a real chance to make some noise in the UCL this time around, though. Theyâve done so before, after all â they made the quarterfinals in 2018, barely falling to Bayern Munich, and theyâve now scored a road draw against their top Group E challenger in Chelsea. The Blues and Rennes both remain exciting teams, but the path to winning Group E is quite manageable.
Also ⊠theyâre pretty dang good. They brought in far more than they sent out in the transfer window, they gave Bayern fits in an eventual extra-time loss in the UEFA Super Cup, and while their goal-scoring form has left them a bit in La Liga play â after scoring three goals in their league opener, theyâve scored just two since â their xG figures are solid, and their passing game is sublime. And in an offense-friendly group, they have the sturdiest defense led by centre-backs Diego Carlos and Jules Kounde.
Six years ago today - #SevillaFC nailed a 93rd minute penalty to grab the win versus a scrappy Villarreal team. Denis Suarez and Bacca with the goals:
Maradona has been sedated tonight because of his withdraws from alcohol.
And other substances âŠ
I wish him well though. If he could just stay away from the coca cola the alcohol wouldnât be such a problem.
Nico Pareja has officially retired from football. What a player!
A failure on multiple levels.
Monchi for failing to identify / buy an adept backup
Lope for starting and playing him every single game until the final whistle
Enrique being a pr*ck for selecting and starting almost every game with him until the final whistle.
A 21 year old Mbappe has seen less pitch time than Navas and even he is gassed out and picking up multiple niggling injuries. How would a soon-to-be 35 Navas cope? Abysmal handling in my eyes.
I think it is more Navasâs own fault than anything. He is not in his twenties anymore, rather mid-thirties, so he needs to give himself rest even when the coaches donât do that. The coaches want the best performances for their teams, and Navas is performing very very well for his age and he is a key component both for us and for Spainâs NT at the moment, given the current systems of play.
So I donât think this will change if Navas doesnât put a stop to it and have a talk with the coaches to get some rest, and thus he is risking serious injuries with this behavior. Iâm pretty sure the coaches ask him if he wants to play, if heâs ok, feel tired etc. and Navas always says YES (probably in a âare you kidding me? of course YESâ manner) because of his passion for football and so it goes on and on.
Yep - I think you are spot on. He didnât even want to come off on Saturday. The player is important, but a strong manager knows how to handle the situation and say look, itâs a long season.
The English FB page of Sevilla had Oliverâs birthday post with: Itâs our midfield maestroâs birthday today⊠I had a good laugh.
Gnagnon was back in training today with the team. I doubt we see him on the pitch anytime soon, but at least heâs back training.
