Opinions on Lopetegui's Sevilla

Welcome @Rogelio ! It’s honestly what i feel right now, and I’ll admit it comes out of desperation to see a different brand of football, cause our players are playing within themselves.

I haven’t seen too much of Favre’s Dortmund, but i’d welcome his style of attacking football. Sure he couldn’t organize a defence for his life, but the foundation is already here. Do you mean to tell me he’s like the Swiss version of Quique Setién?

We would be mad to ditch Lopetegui at this stage! Just my opinion though.

I wouldn’t get rid of him midseason. He deserves to see it out. But we’re stagnating.

I personally think we still expect a bit to much. I mean we not Real Madrid and shouldn’t demand to win the league. If we have a strong cup run, maybe get through our champions league group and cement top 3 or 4 we got to be happy still.

I know we want more but it’s probably still our delusions that get the better of us at times. Winning the title still isn’t realistic for me but we are still in the next best place. Our squad is not as strong as Real Madrid or Atleti though.

Granted the football can be better at times but like I said before I don’t feel we have the real quality in final third or the explosive pace or guile to hurt teams more than we do. With the players we got and the current budget he has to work with we are doing decent in my view and the possession play is probably must suitable to our players style.

Even if we were playing ‘better’, we might still have lost that game at the Bernabeu. My problem is that we haven’t significantly improved against the other beatable teams. We still only need one hand to count how many great performances we’ve had this season.

Whatever Caparrós might think, our squad is 4th best in Spain. But i don’t see any progression. We were starting to take a turn in the 2nd half of last season, but it’s more of the same. The results are decent, I’ll give him that. But i’m losing faith.

Significantly improved? Our points are greater, our defense numbers are better. Is our offense better? Probably not, but you also have to figure that teams are now seeing this Lopetegui team for the third year in a row. We haven’t changed very much so it is a bit easier to play against, yet we still get results. The game today was close for a while, but couldn’t have been finished off much sooner. The guys didn’t finish well. There were chances and they weren’t finished. Is that on Lopetegui?

These players are lacking in confidence. Everyone plays Sevilla like a big team, except we almost always play to the level of the opponent.

That’s my opinion as well Chris. I personally think most of the games our attacking players lack the quality to score or just aren’t explosive enough to get more goals.

I personally think with another manager who isn’t as organised as lopetegui we would more likely crash and burn than go to next level. Lope understands the Spanish football and how to get results in this style of game.

In the main he manages games well and isn’t afraid to change things when the players aren’t performing. My opinion is due to his management we are on the points we on and we’d be more than likely on less without him. I don’t think these players are good enough overall to play to open every game. We have a good side that has quality but we are built on the foundation of a great defence and great coaching with lots of experience.

You also make a good point that teams have worked us out. To be honest to get the results we have playing with the same squad is impressive in that regard.

We only lost 3 games this season though. Only by the odd goal as well. We are a hard team to beat and a lot of that is down to lopetegui. I can’t remember many times we got hammered. It happened more often under other managers but hardly ever under lope.

Sure the attack lacks but he does try things and he can only do it with the budget and players he’s got. He doesn’t have the world class players these other European powerhouse clubs have got or even the Madrid clubs have.

Really good point. The biggest reason I’d be hesitant to switch coaches.

I don’t want to believe this, but sadly you might be right. Are we really looking at YEN, Rafa, Ocampos, Lamela, Munir, Suso, Idrissi, Papu, Oscar & Oliver as not good enough?

I kind of feel they all good players but they aren’t special players. They are solid and will do a good job for you. I’m just not sure if any of them have that X factor to push us further. Time will tell for rest of the season. Still they are all important because none of them are bad but just good instead of extraordinary level.

Out of them I’d probably put YEN and Lamela as the closest to that special level but still not quite. I feel the rest are decent and solid but to be fair mir is doing well lately and papu Gomez can bring the magic occasionally but he’s not always consistent. I’d say Oliver is decent level too.

LAMELA / PAPU / OCAMPOS / RAFA MIR

I’m just hoping to see that quartet play more often. Hopefully Coco comes back soon.

Yeah I agree. The positive news is Ocampos is back to his old form and best. He’s the guy with the X factor again at moment. I feel Lamela adds that too and with him back with in form Ocampos and Mir and papu in form we can do damage to teams. Then keeping the balance with the sound defensive structure behind these players. We will see but I’m still positive overall.

I’m with Mark on this re some of us expecting too much. Yes we can dream of winning the title, but whoever we have in charge is very long odds against making it happen.
Since its inception in 1929, a total of 62 teams have competed in La Liga. Nine of them have been crowned champions, with Real Madrid winning the title a record 34 times and Barcelona 26.

I’m happy with how things are going at the moment with Lope. I didn’t want him anywhere near us when his name was first mentioned for the job, but I would consider it madness to get rid of him now.

Lucien Favre? Yes please @Edinho !

I would stick with Lopetegui as I think Sevilla need some stability in terms of the coach and I think all in all he is doing a good job. Plus I think there is a lack of suitable available replacements right now.

I think he is missing one or two players and like someone (Mark I think) said, we don’t have an out right star at the forward position like the big three do.
Ocampos getting back into form is going to help. I think he is key for Lopetegui’s offense. The question is going to be, can he do what he has done on the right side, on the left when Lamela and Suso comes back.

I’ve got a feeling that Diego Martinez could be the next Sevilla manager if the timings coincide. He notched up wins against Real Madrid and Barcelona with Granada, took Granada to the quarters of uefa and this year turned down the Getafe job to improve his formation in the UK … I think he’s waiting in the wings.

He appears to be the only credible Spanish manager on the radar should Lopetegui leave for whatever reason.

His agent is pushing for that Man U job, at least in the papers.
