Opinions on Lopetegui's Sevilla

It’s a tough one for me, you look at the league table and you go yeah he’s doing a good job. Have a chance again for the title this season you would think.

However you watch the games and it just lacks that something. Odd team selection, subs ect. Can be quite negative sometimes when you just want more.

For me it’s who would you have instead, there’s is that motto of if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it. But last season I think it showed he lacks that final touch to really challenge for the tittle. I think this season would be the same under him.

I think that we would be crazy to lose Lope. Who would do a better job without breaking the bank?
Yes we maybe boring at times but he gets the results.

This is from last season

LOL Emery 19th, should be among the top 5, Koeman, Bielsa and Solskjaer should be in the top 50 list, maybe.

At least Lopeteui has won something with Sevilla, I don’t think Bielsa has won anything in his last 13 clubs after leaving South America.

I think the thread should read ‘Opinions on Lopetegui’ the ‘Future of’ sounds a bit too critical and makes us look a whining bunch.

Agreed, especially about Koeman and Solskjaer… they are a bunch of pathetic coaches.

I agree. Lope doesn’t have the funds these cheque book managers have. With the budget and players he has he does a good job overall.

Lope out! 20 points isn’t enough! We should have not lost at Granada!

With all due respect, but I think you are dumbing down the entire discussion with those sarcastic ‘Lope out’-comments. Lope will be celebrated as a hero if he gets us the title, no matter how he does it. Questions are raised because of the way this Sevilla-team is playing and thus being looked upon by others. How many of us would have followed this team to this day if we back in the day turned on our telly and saw a couple of the recent matches?

A team is more than points. And of course we should be demanding much more of the team, eapecially considering how high we praise the players and material. I would think twice before hiring Mourinho to manage my beloved team, solely because of the way he behaves and because of the way he takes games on - no matter how many points he gets.

Just my take…

I mean it’s funny and all, but let’s see how far this goes. We said at the start there are easily 9 winnable games coming, and after that it will be the real challenge. half November-December

Yeah long way to go. Still I’m encouraged by our home performances so far with YEN to comeback as well. As for away we are solid and tough to beat. The final piece of the puzzle we lack is being braver away from home. Like for example at Mallorca next let’s see what happens. Hopefully we go to try win from the start but time will tell. Won’t be easy game but hopefully we can win again to keep the momentum going.

To be fair I think SurreySevilla’s comments are tongue in cheek and banter.

Results wise you can’t argue with Lope’s league record, it’s excellent and amongst the best of any Sevilla manager in history.

Concerns though about style of play (I won’t count today haha) are legitimate though as are those about our very average start to the CL.

Opinions is what it’s all about at the end of the day!

We were cheerfull after Valencia and we know how the road went after that  But i’m glad with what I saw today.

Nailed it @Niller .

We were chatting about this with Edi after shooting the podcast and we came to the conclusion that neither of us would have became fans of Sevilla if it wasn’t for the exotic and spectacular football of the 2005-2009 era.

It’s all down to an individual’s perspective on football anyway. Someone is happy with the results only, someone wouldn’t care much about the result as long as we play decent football. But we’ve shown that we can both play attractive football and get results, it’s just that you need courage to play like that, fix the defensive errors and just stick to that philosophy.

It’s an overall positive vibe when we win matches by playing like today, or like vs. Valencia.

Agreed about Mourinho too. Last reports saying he bashed his B team after losing 6-1 to Bodo Glimt. It was a terrible display, but you simply cannot say stuff like: “Some of you can’t even start for a Norwegian team” or “some of you couldn’t even start in Serie B”, even if it is true. It hurts the players, the atmosphere in the team and everything else - it kills the spirit.

Thankfully we don’t have that issue with Lope and it’s just a change in the overall approach that is needed, not anything drastic.

I bet SurreySevilla wouldn’t mind Mourinho as a coach , but he’s also a fan of :poop:, Inter, Bayer Leverkusen and a bunch of other teams, so I don’t take him very seriously when it comes to Sevilla anyway :stuck_out_tongue:

Definitely don’t get carried away. Mallorca will be a tricky one and Osasuna have started well also.

On paper winnable games coming up until the big one against :poop: but no game is easy and we all know that being Sevilla fans!

We’re definitely in a great position and we should enjoy it and what an opportunity to challenge for the title this season, but a long way to go yet!

I heard rumours that SurreySevilla would sign for a line-up with 10 goalkeepers and 1 fieldplayer

Don’t forget he also likes Lope because Lope was a goalkeeper himself :stuck_out_tongue: - so he’s a bit biased on this one.

I know and of course there should be room for banter. I just don’t think the Lope-discussion is as black and white as it is sometimes drawn out to be.

Mourinho and Lope may have comparable styles of play, but personality wise I’ve always thought Lope has come across okay whereas I’ve never liked Mourinho and his arrogance!

There are many cases, but off the top my head I can mention Capello who was sacked even though he won the league with RM, with the ‘style of play’ being cited as the main reason for his termination.

So it’s not that the trophies account for everything in football. I’d be very happy to the extent that I’d die peacefully if we ever win La Liga and/or CL in my lifetime, but you simply can’t do that with conservative football because you’d struggle against teams that you should have annihilated otherwise. I would honestly understand playing like that if we wouldn’t have the players to play differently, but it’s the contrary in reality.

Also some might confuse it with Simeone’s Atletico, but it is definitely not the same. While Atletico focused on strengthening the defense and playing it safe, they were also very ruthless and highly productive when going forward, and they have mastered set pieces (both defending them and scoring from them). So they’ve played with a clear purpose and Simeone instilled the winning mentality in the club. Before Simeone they were mostly pathetic as we’ve discussed here before.

So as long as Lope does similar things to Simeone where we solidify the defense (as we’ve generally did) but play with a clear purpose to win the match and not go for the draw most of the time, he’ll win me over. Attacking football with as little defensive errors as possible is also welcomed, especially in the type of matches like today.
