MD1 - Osasuna vs Sevilla FC [22/23]

That harsh penalty definitely hurt. We also did not help ourselves by only scoring 1 goal. The transfer window is still open and it is obvious we need some reinforcements.

Not sure what game you were watching but I’ll leave it there.

Feel a bit sad. Felt we could have got a point tonight. Credit to osasuna though. They played well but it’s a shame it was decided on a dodgy penalty.

It’s a bad result but I’m not going to panic. It’s a long season ahead but it shows we still need a couple more reinforcements. I don’t think we played that bad just fell a bit short in the key moments.

We had our moments but ultimately just a bit inconsistent at times and our defence obviously not as secure. We need to be patient but I’m still confident things will get better in time.

Let’s hope monchi gets us a few more signings soon.

Lope won’t get sacked until Sevilla finish OUTSIDE of European places. He’s got the team finishing in top four for consecutive seasons, so Castro and Monchi are happy. They only want stability, not ambition.

This one where we played how Osasuna were supposed to play and Osasuna played how we were supposed to play.

The one where we were on top until a ridiculously soft penalty cost us.

Easy to always blame Lope. Sometimes it just isn’t to be and tonight wasn’t. He can’t be blamed for losing his two star defenders for instance.

Ridiculous penalty call, but it shouldn’t have come to that. The substitutions had zero impact on the match. Lamela was terrible. Why was Ivan on? Why were Telles and Acuna on at the same time, especially when we are down a goal. Why wasn’t the creativity of Oliver brought on? This was as much on Lopetegui as it was the ref. No balls.

It’s better that we lost though. Losing always provides more food for thought and incites a stronger reaction in the club compared to a draw.

With a draw, we’d all say: ehh… at least we didn’t lose. Now we lost… luck has run out it seems.

Yeah but that doesn’t excuse that decision we were robbed of at least a point

Entirely true in sentiment but in reality the axe always falls mid season.

True that. Gudelj was the culprit for the first goal conceded and Fernando had to cover almost all the time in CB for both him and Rekik, making some crucial tackles at times.

However, I don’t think it was a defensive problem tonight… rather an offensive one. We still have all the same players (beside the 2 CB’s) from last year, at least the ones that were playing regularly.

Regardless of Mir’s goal, I still think we need another striker. Ideally someone that can do something… somehow… with the ball at feet when dribbling. We’re not a tap-in team, so the strikers need to do a lot more work to be worthy of a nr.9 spot in this system.

Hoping Lope was playing the long game…a loss gets him more money for signings…

Should have got at least a draw here. Strange game for Papu tonight, made the equaliser superbly, but then should really have scored from a great chance created by a smart back heel from Tecatito and was not disciplined enough to close down his player when we lost the ball in our half. Then the needless, sloppy arm across their guy in our box that gave the ref a chance to give a very soft pen against Sevilla.
The subs in second half did not produce much, esp Rakitic who kept losing possession with misplaced passes and YEN who ran around a bit in the first 15 minutes since coming on but does not have enough quality to threaten the opposition goal. Lamela kept possession well enough and had a couple of good sharp incisive passes but also miscontrolled the ball on a promisiing attack once.
Much of the problem is that it was too easy to mark YEN when he was not running off-side and there was no one else at the top of attack for advanced midfielders to pick out.
Lope’s risk-averse tactics and approach are holding the team back again - the board needs to really have a word or find a better manager asap.

The subs were all so inappropriate I have to question Lopetegui’s ability. He seems to think that our quality in depth is enough to win games, he just needs to put another body on and it will be OK, total imbecile.

In case you didn’t know, I’m finished with him.

Yes, soft goal the first one. Gudelj positionally was in the wrong place.

Very obvious that we need reinforcements in defence and I agree, more offensively also. We’re lacking a real quality striker.

Tonight did show we’re short in a few areas and this does need addressing.

Just trying to put things into context. We played okay at a tough place in Osasuna who I think will be top half this season. On another night we would have got at least a draw. We played a lot worse last season and won. Sometimes I feel it doesn’t take much for the knives to be out for Lopetegui.

I’m reserving judgment for now and not panicking and overreacting after one game. There’s a long way to go this season and I’m sure things will get better once a few reinforcements settle in.

If you are thinking the striker is the problem, start over. You need prime O fenómeno for this. If anything the striker is the victim.

I don’t want to type it all here again, so here are my quick and dirty thoughts on the game. Disappointing start to the season, but hey, at least we have football again!
