La Liga 25/26 - Matchday 1 - Athletic Club v Sevilla FC (3-2) - Loss

There aren’t many tougher opening fixtures in La Liga than to start off at San Mamés. High temperatures in Andalusia guarantee Sevilla
always begin their seasons away from home. But travelling to Bilbao with virtually the same squad that finished in 17th last season, to face a UCL-qualified Athletic, is asking for the same Hell.

After the club’s reportedly failed last-ditch attempt to register new signings Odysseas, Suazo & Alfon, new coach Mati Almeyda could only call up 15 first-teamers. Among them are Pedrosa, Ejuke & Idumbo, who have recently recovered from injury, while Bade, Nianzou, Jordán, Vargas & Rafa Mir remain sidelined.

Predicted XI: Nyland — Carmona, Gudelj, Salas, Pedrosa — Agoume, Bueno — Lukebakio, Sow, Ejuke — Akor.

It isn’t the best of circumstances for Almeyda’s La Liga coaching debut, but he gets another chance to further assess the character of this team, after some average pre-season outings. Despite Valverde’s men being overwhelming favourites, we know that with our club, the improbable always remains in play.

If we can somehow get a draw it would be a great result. It would help build some confidence for the games to come that are more winnable on paper at least. Vamos mi Sevilla!

I would necessarily trust this over @Edinho predictions, but MARCA has Peque replacing Manu Bueno, albeit further forward, and Idumbo over Ejuke, Castrín over Gudelj.

Gotta be honest, I think I’d prefer the MARCA lineup, especially in the back line, but then again it’s a lot of pressure on poor Castrín to start a match like this. Maybe that would be unfair to the kid…

Let’s be honest we praying on Lukébakio to work his magic or maybe a set piece goal. I don’t see how else we can hurt them with players available and our current squad. We need luck and hopefully they not at their best. Vamos!

The only position where i trust Gudelj is when slots in between both CBs to make a back-5. Gonna need a hella disclipline at the back, and so to constantly look for that front trio on the break. Lets get it!

You have a lot of trust in that guy Edinho…

The only position where I trust Gudelj is on the bench… or out of the club.

Found a place to catch the game in our little German town. Vamos mi Sevilla!!!

Is Andrés Castrín a surprise start?

Does Castrín count as a cantera? That would mean our starting back 4 is full cantera, I think that hasn’t happened in decades.

I think that’s a harsh penalty, I’d have liked to see VAR overturn it but what can we expect in this league.

Athletic getting a penalty for basically nothing, while Idumbo actually got hit with 0 ball and they just wave it off like it was nothing. This season starts great, thanks RFEF! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I agree, very light tackle there for a PK

Weak ass pen. I don’t even think Nico could have played the ball and he went down way too easy.

I guess that’s karma. Juanlu went to the ground after catching a pinky-finger to the nose. And then he committed a non-existent penalty… good times.

Frustrating to see the game be influenced by such a shitty decision.

Weak ass shit!

We are shocking! Unless cordon does a madness in last 2 weeks of transfer window we relegation fodder.

Bracing for a rough year. Still some time in the portal window for reinforcements

Inexistent pen… criminal RFEF at it again. But it’s becoming a cliche now and not even worth mentioning.

I think it’s really not worth watching this team if we don’t get respected to at least Atletico’s level. But we can’t be respected with a bitch President at helm, and a lackluster sporting director.

This is all on Cordon for not assembling the team on time. He is paid to do 1 job and can’t do it … get the fuck out!

I don’t trust those in charge to get anything done or care enough. If we get anything it will be scraps or players no one else wants.

Grim times.
