Navas said in the post game interview that he couldn’t walk on Wednesday!
One hell of a feisty game that. Getafe as physical as ever and made it a real scrap. Not a game for the purists but entertaining all the same. Atmosphere from the fans was superb. Great to see them getting right behind the team.
Never easy playing against Getafe so credit to us for a battling performance and what I thought was a deserved win. We did restrict them to very few chances and held out relatively comfortably in the end with ten men. That handball was a clear pen also and I don’t know what VAR saw there.
A huge win that for morale and some winnable games coming up against Alaves and Valladolid. So fingers crossed this can kick start our season.
Hand unnatural position away from the body. Inside the box. Impeded movement of the ball. Should have totally been a penalty there.
Pimienta played the right players, and for the most part, that’s what got us this win. Defense will always be a problem as long as we don’t have that CB pairing cemented. If Nianzou is ready for the fight, that position is his. We saw how he battled in the latter stages when it was time to shut it down. He needs to start matches with that mentality.
It’s a quirk that fixtures 5 and 6 are often a turning point and the whole season can hinge on them, some examples:-
2005-06 Juande Ramos’ first season and with Kanouté, Fabiano, Renato, Alves, Navas. After fixture 5 Sevila are in 15th place with 5 points. Won UEFA. Finished 5th in the league.
2013-14 In Emery’s first full season. After fixture 5 Sevilla are in 20th place with 2 points. Won UEFA, finished 5th in the league.
2015-16 Emery’s third season. After fixture 5 Sevilla are in 20th place with 2 points. Won UEFA, finished 7th in the league.
2023-24 Lopetegui. After fixture 5 Sevilla are in 16th place with 4 points. Won UEFA with Mendilibar. Finished in 12th place.
This season we don’t have UEFA to hold us back !
That’s the kind of optimistic take I like to see!
Btw, I didn’t get to watch the match but saw this take on the endlessly confusing handball. “rules”, or rather, endlessly ineffectual referees not applying the rules correctly.
Somehow the left image isn’t a handball and the right image is a handball…grr.
But on the theme of optimism, when you play well, sometimes even bad refereeing can’t stand in the way of winning.
A couple notes on Navas. His interview after the match shows him clearly recovering from sobbing. I didn’t get to see it live to know what exactly started the tears, but his remarks made it clear:
He’s been in a lot of pain, he knows his days are numbered, and he suffers when the team is in the dumps.
Summary of his remarks for Google translate purposes:
The post match interview:
And finally, a great tribute to him on what could be his final goal for Sevilla:
Legend
i’ve stopped commenting on VAR decisions, on the Isaac handball you should have seen the VAR image they served up here, it was pitiful, no clear definition and they have crystal clear images. VAR has 42 exclusive cameras plus the official broadcaster feeds plus the original offside cameras, and they still manipulate what they serve up.
Reports today that Marcao has a fractured nose and is suffering from shock (concussion?)
Navas is staying till the end. What he said in the post-match was that he’s so depressed with the situation he can’t even play with his kids. He’s an absolute diamond guy and footballer.
He was in training this morning.{ Edit } No he didn’t train with the rest.
I thought what he said was that he was in so much hip pain that he couldn’t play with his kids…but I dunno, sometimes when you read spliced together interview notes, it can twist the message. Anyways, he’s a gem, but I do actually think he’ll probably leave…but then again, depends where we are in the table. I can picture him pulling a Caparrós if we’re not in a safe position come December
the one right after the match he said he couldn’t walk Wednesday because of the hip pain.
Been there with hip pain. 2 torn labrums and 1 hip replacement later, I am finally pain free. It effects your whole life. Even sitting hurts. I could not imagine playing in a match for 60 minutes. Navas is truly badass. I wish him the best. Might be time to transition to coaching :). He was there on the touchline after being subbed.
I’m at that stage with hip pain and I’ve got an hernia inguinal on top, surgery needed soon.
I watched a rewind and it was a great interview and he mentions ‘si la cadera aguanta’ early in the interview, and the playing with his kids towards the end. That’s not what I saw Sunday on another channel, so it was the second interview or a chopped down version of the first one, probably a chopped up version to make it sound more dramatic.
It worked, I got wound up and I was almost in tears.
Great summary of the goal, the career, the man, the Navas.
