23/24 - MD1: Sevilla FC (1) vs Valencia (2)

I think we should give Gattoni time. Obviously he played horribly but Koundé wasn’t great when he first signed either, and he ended up being fantastic.

Lack of quality in attack and lack of deternined effort when defending in second half.
Oliver was lazy and ineffective, Bade so sloppy with his weak header back from almost half line and should have trusted Bono to get to it anyway, Acuna kept doing his wildly overhit diagonal crosses, without YEN we has no focal point up front.

Deflating after wishful thinking/optimistic mood before the match against this Valencia team who have not had a good transfer window and were supposed to have been even weaker than last season.

I saw a comment from Mendi a couple days ago about Gudelj playing this season at CB … why? He had his best season last year and mostly played CDM while only filling in at CB when necessary. I guess there’s not much faith in our CB depth which I thought was resolved from some transfers.

As for todays match, it seems Juanlu is the RB replacement for Montiel, not sure how that will work long term.

Suso is :fire:

All in all it’s basically the same squad as last year so my expectations have pretty much fully been tempered after this match, with that reality set back in. Would like to see Sow get the start next.

Forgot to wear my new kit. That must’ve been it.

I’ll do better on Wednesday

Their first goal came after some truly pathetic non-defending from Acuna and Rakitic in the first place, failing to stop one opponent between them with some half-hearted attempt, esp Rakitic who just stood and watched; then Gudelj stood off his player without putting any challenge in to stop the cutback pass; then Oliver just let Diakhaby jog past him into the box, free to receive the pass and score.

We can’t just leave it to Lamela and Fernando to track back properly and to try to close opponents down. Sow and Gattoni look like they will need some time to adapt.

Some worrying trends continue, including how eagerly the arbiter went for it but we should look at ourselves, disappointing start after all but can only hope for that we learn from it. And then having to face Man City is one of the worst thing you can hope for, completely different level that we don’t seem ready for, or best if we somehow upset them. But realistically… how?

Awful game to watch from 2 teams that look like they will be fighting off relegation, good job it was only Valencia, any half decent team would have had double figures tonight.
Man City could play their youth team on Wednesday and beat us easy on that showing.
If we lose at Alaves & then at home against Girona things are going to get very toxic for Mendi & Castro.

Don’t know if it helps. But my kids’ magic mixie predicted the loss today. But also predicted a win against Man City on Wednesday. So, assuming Magic Mixies are clairvoyant, we have hardware on the way this Wednesday.

PS - crosspost from our SF WhatsApp thread, sorry!

The Mixie seems pretty committed to this prediction…

Our goal was well done tho so I’m glad for Youssef to get going early. Also meant a lot for Suso seeing his reaction. It showed that both were aligned with the concept, not pure anticipation but also feeling what the other player wants and I like seeing that.

Eek !

One of his better games sure, got in a couple of good crosses but he’s so darned predictable and his shots are awful. Mind you, the whole team has a problem crossing the ball so he deserves the medal when he gets a couple of decent crosses in.

I too think Sow should have started, error by Mendi but at least he kept Jordan out of it.
The defence has looked shakey all preseason regardless of who are the two central defenders, seems to be too wide just doesn’t look right to me. Badé’s red card is and was a nightmare, it drained the confidence out of Sevilla. Not sure how much our performance was conditioned by the excessive heat.

Honestly I haven’t even noticed him in the pitch until the second half.

Agreed. Suso was largely inaffective in the 1st half. They couldn’t find him, and he didn’t drop deeper to offer a way out. Not sure if by design, cause someone like Oliver & Papu certainly would. I think Fernando limited us a whole lot in the buildup and Valencia recognized this. But Mendi mentioned post-game that we didn’t play our normal game of using the wings. Not sure what was on these players minds, but everything looked disjointed.

I know we all thought taking off YEN with a man down was questionable, but I think he didn’t have 90 minutes in him (same with Lamela). Why risk him this early in the season, especially when you technically only have 1 striker available? I think it’s clear now that Rafa is leaving, so we’re just waiting for Orta to finalize these moves in the next few weeks.

I think part of the reason Suso was poor in the first half but good in the second is because of his positioning. In the first half he played centrally and in the second he moved to the right wing where he was much better

Put the right pieces around him and you’ll see the man cook. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Funniest thing how last year they stated about needing to change the referees approach to penalties and the ease of giving them. Didn’t happen and this year continue the same shit. Las Palmas gets a penalty for being hit slightly on the heel after having given a cross gets a penalty, like what? Athletic player gets absolutely demolished by Militao after he barely gets his shot in. Ref doesn’t even blink (Hala Madrid). Mallorca got one also where a player in a bad situation that he can not do anything in except just go down after being slightly touched and they give it as well. Girona defender Blind coming in late with, probably the latest one of all and ref wants to give it. Gets blown back by the var… Directly showing how messed up this league is.

As the money involved rose out of proportions Football is just Maffifa business now.
