Champions League Playoff / Leg 1

Gonna be hard for Istanbul to come back in the RSP. Vamos good win guys.

Now we can counter the hell out of them in the second leg at home. It seems that Berizzo is gradually building a counter-attacking teamā€¦ though we dominated, we were left clueless most of the time as to where to pass etc.

Only when the A-teamers were fielded, we scored the 2nd and more or less sealed the tie.

Timā€™s words coming to lifeā€¦ canā€™t trust Rico anymore nowā€¦ the fella is becoming liable, hopefully not too much. Iā€™ve laughed when seen a dude in the English FB page of Sevilla say that Rico does not deserve Sevilla, rather Barca or RMā€¦ FACEPALM!

So, hopefully lesson learned for Berizzoā€¦ no more mini-argentina and no more B-teamers in important matches.

Good tap-in from WBY, he got those canā€™t deny itā€¦props to Navas for the pinpoint pass.

Now letā€™s beat Espanyol more comfortably than Basaksehir tonight!

Once again elemenary error by Rico. Puts the hands out to collect a shot, thatā€™s to say he knows where the ball is going, but it escapes his hands and he has his legs open, what do you think will happen Sergio?

Iā€™m losing faith in Mercado.

As requested, Nolito came in and Correa switched to the right wing, just seconds before the Turks scored. Navas replaced Correa soon after and that resulted in the goal by Ben Y. Ben Y was not in the centre much but doing a lot of work for the team outside the offennsive zone and when the moment happend he was there in the centre, he has goal, heā€™s a goal sniffer without the quality of the more famous, but heā€™s the genuine article.

The game was conditioned by the the heavy rainfall and was a lottery. But Sevilla stood firm and 1-1 would have been an acceptable result. With the victory we have to be careful with their counters, they donā€™t have much apart from the counter attack.

Itā€™s time for Corchia to claim his place. I donā€™t think the manager is fool enough to believe otherwise.

Whenā€™s the last match Mercado didnā€™t get a yellow card?

I think you are being a little harsh on Rico there Tim. I agree it was his error that gave them their goal but he made 3 or 4 really good point blank saves that looked to be certain goals.
Overall a satisfactory result, we bossed the 1st half and looked very comfortable until the conditions worsened with the torrential rain making our passing game very difficult at times.

Thanks for posting the highlights! Didnā€™t get a chance to see the game as it was on a stupid time in the morning here (as usual).

Escudero brilliant by the looks even in just the highlight reel.

Great last goal Navas to Yedderā€¦ one thing yedder has goingā€¦ he knows how to find the back of the net.

Great result and should see us through to the group stages.

I canā€™t imagine what more Escudero needs to do to get picked for the national team, top player and back in top form. Lopetegi is another establishment pawn, a yes man for the in-crowd.

I think Sevilla are backing out of the Zeegelaar deal with the Champions looking positive and some disquiet amongst the fans.

Champions league money. Last season it was ā‚¬12.7m guaranteed participation bonus, plus 1.5m for a win 0.5m for a draw (group stages). Plus 6m to reach the last 16. So I think we can afford a little more than 3m for a broken wing back with personal problems.

He sure does, but perhaps the tap ins and close distance shots are not enough. We need strikers that can take the ball, do something with it and score. The ones that could do that were: Bacca, Gameiro, Fabiano, Kanoute?

We currently do not have any killer striker, or any striker that can do something with the ball and score, meaning someone independent who can score at different situations, not only particular ones.

Was hoping for Muriel to provide us that pleasure, but it seems it will take him time to fully adapt and only at the end of the season (or at least until January) we can see what he is all made of.

Our management is to blame if Villarreal loaned Bacca with a purchase option, that means we were not interested to even pay his wages for 1 season, this tells a lot for the ambition. Then they were about to make a stupid mistake with that anonymous Marvin guy of Sporting for 3 million.

We couldā€™ve sacrificed a bit and had Bacca, Jonny Castro and Marcos Llorente on loan, to have a lethal squad, but we rather preferred 2 average strikers (no independent killers), a crappy LB to not even compete with Escudero, honestly a better solution in that case would be promoting a LB from Sevilla Atletico, and of course no back-up for Nā€™Zonzi and/or Pizarro. MKD cannot be counted as a backup because he is not a DM, he sure runs a lot but nothing comes out of that if tackles and ball fighting are not there, among other featuresā€¦ plus heā€™s physically weak so yeah.

It seems that we donā€™t have much aspirations for this season and considering the managementā€™s behavior, we will settle for 4th place or less and hope to finish second in the group stages of CL, without any ambition to go any furtherā€¦ so rinse and repeat of the previous season, only that it might be harder to reach that stage with Villarreal now fighting seriously for the 4th also and we need to have some great luck in the CL draw or who knows what can happen.

only got to see the highlights, but saying Rico was a liability seems a bit strong. the goal looked bad but it was from close range, skimming on a rainy field. it was still bad. but he had some other excellent saves.

escuderoā€™s goalā€¦ wow. banegaā€™s few moments in those clips looked great. and navas-wby is sweet. not sure why people are feeling so negative about the team. im pumped. excited to see where we can go!

Shandm I agree and remember made the same point last year about not having a striker who the defense feared in open space. There was a response saying that Sampaoli didnā€™t rely on a killer striker like that but instead preferred to have different positions stepping up in attack. I think yesterday was pretty much the same deal so yeah as it stands I would expect a similar season unless Muriel can live up to his price tag. Bigger teams will do to us for a whole game what Istanbul did in brief stretches where they stop worrying about us putting the ball up in the air for a striker to chase down and muscle off or outrun a defender or two, and then counter on Rico who (despite great point blank range saves) seems to struggle with quick shots on the break. That being said, our midfield looks great but those pretty passes need to end in goals instead of long shots by midfielders and defenders with an occasional flash of WBY from close range.

PS how nice was it to not see us forcing Rico to play the ball out to the defense and then lose it after 20 passes between them?

The team is not complete manā€¦ and not deep enough also. Weā€™re like 2-3 injuries/suspensions away from chaos, especially in the midfield.

Hello guys! Iā€™m back. Had trouble connecting to new forum but on. Very happy with the win last night.

We played a solid match and showed our experience. Was a tricky match and the conditions were terrible.

However, we defended well and we scored 2 great goals. The 2nd especially, as was great to see Nolito and navas combine and set up WBY, for a classy finish.

We in a strong position in tie and now it will hopefully set us up for strong start to season. We did the hard work. I hope for 1-2 more signing too but we did great business so far

Loved how we started the game, but we were quickly reminded that Mercado is still susceptible to talented wingers. Not acceptable at CL level. With CarriƧoā€™s injury woes, maybe he stays at CB? Montoya could fill in at RB (and iā€™m secretly hoping Navas brings out his inner Alves and covers there too.)

So with Toto starting both Nā€™Zonzi & Pizarro, itā€™s clear we need another DM. Thereā€™s an Aldo Duscher waiting out there somewhere. How about Claudio Yacob from WBA who we were linked with some time ago? Reports saying Llorente just might stay in Madrid.

Good on Ben Yedder getting that decisive goal. Heā€™s definitely feeling pressure of a record signing just waiting to get his spot. Also, Iā€™m not so down on losing out on Bacca. Iā€™d rather a versatile (and younger) Jovetic instead if weā€™re getting a 3rd striker.

I applaud Arias for getting in primary targets, and getting it done early in the transfer season. Not as easy as it seems. But can we, for once, just splash the cash and go over budget this one summer and get Jonny from Celta? Heā€™s 3 players in 1. At DM, Iā€™m sure thereā€™s players available at less than ā‚¬10M: Acquah, Yacob, or even Krycho on loan. Once CL is confirmed, weā€™ll have a better idea of which players will come.
